It's okay to say Yes... even if it's the first store you've been to!
You made it! You have found the love of your life and are getting ready to share that love in front of all of your friends and family. But before the wedding, there are so many decisions you have to make! The cake, the venue, the flowers, the music, the linens, and of course, THE DRESS. We know the dress is really the most important part (although, we might be a little biased) and can be just as big of a decision as deciding to get married in the first place. It's not as easy as it used to be when there were only two dresses to choose from and only one type of sleeve (yes we're talking about you, 1980's wedding gown). Now there are hundreds of designers, styles, laces, and fabrics not to mention Pinterest boards galore all dedicated to weddings. From there, you finally go to your first bridal appointment! You are greeted with champagne by an eager consultant ready to make your dress dreams come true. You try on multiple dresses, some that are fantastic and others that might be better for someone else. The appointment is coming to a close and your consultant is getting ready to ask you that question that every woman that has ever watched Say Yes to the Dress has been waiting for, "Are you saying yes to the dress?!" But then, you decide to wait and leave without buying your gown. Join us in this 6-part series as we explore the hurdles so many brides face that make it difficult for her to say "yes" to her dress and why they can be easily overcome before even going to your first appointment.
1. Even if it's the first store you've been to
Going to your first bridal appointment should be a wonderful, fun, stress-free experience that is all about you. You should be able to trust that your consultant has your best interest at heart and will show you the best of everything that fits your vision (and your budget!). The biggest misconception about finding your gown is that you need to sample all of the dresses in the area before making your choice so you don't feel like they are missing out; that just isn't the case.
The Emotional Connection: When a bride has an emotional connection to a dress, that's the first sign to us as consultants that this could be the dress. After we bring it up to the next level by adding a veil and some accessories and the emotional connection gets stronger for not only the bride, but also the entourage, that's a good indicator to everyone that this is the dress. An emotional connection doesn't have to mean that everyone is crying tears or joy; it's what is shining through from the inside out. It's that look the bride has in her eyes and the smile she has on her face that truly shows how beautiful she feels in that dress. The entire picture comes together.
Other Appointments: Even after recognizing the emotional connection, sometimes brides are still nervous to say yes because it's the first store they've been to and are worried they might be missing out on other gowns that could be waiting for them at their next appointment that day. If you find your gown during your first appointment, some boutiques will even call the other stores and cancel your appointments for you so you can go celebrate. Finding your dress is like finding your fiancé; once you fall in love and they propose, you stop looking for someone else, even though there are a million fish in the sea.
So. Many. Dresses. In today's day and age, we are so fearful of missing out, we try and sample as much as we can before making a choice because the market is so flooded. This should not be the mindset when looking for your wedding dress. The more dresses a bride tries on, the more confused and flustered she'll get, and she will start to lose her vision of how she wants to look on her wedding day. There are only so many all lace gowns that you can try on. The dresses will start to blend together. And why keep trying on dresses that don't fulfill your vision? It'll only makes things worse, and not only will you get frustrated with yourself, you'll get frustrated with how you look, and that, my beautiful bride, is not how you want to feel. You want to feel beautiful, from the day you say yes, to the day you say "I do".
We hope this brings some insight into a huge hurdle that we see time, and time again. Stay tuned for our next post in the series when we talk about buying your dress even if the wedding is over a year away.
